A new chair of Transport for Wales has been revealed.

Vernon Everitt, who is currently a non executive board member of the Welsh Government’s transport body as well as chair of Transport for Greater Manchester, will take up the chair role from Scott Waddington.

His appointment is subject to pre-appointment scrutiny by the Senedd which will take place later this week.

Mr Everitt has previously been a senior executive at Transport for London with responsibility for improving customer service and driving up journeys and revenue on the public transport network.

Announcing the preferred candidate Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates, said: “Vernon brings a wealth of transport experience from both Manchester and London, as well as already being very familiar with our priorities in Wales.”

“I would like to put on record my appreciation for the critical role that the current Chair, Scott Waddington, has played in the significant growth of the organisation since its incorporation in 2018, as well as navigating the unprecedented challenges faced by public transport operators as a result of the pandemic.”

Mr Skates will confirm his decision following the pre-appointment hearing.

The chair role has a remuneration of £35,000 a year, plus reasonable expenses, for a commitment of 60-days per annum.

Latest figures from the Office for Road and Rail show that TfW, which operates the Wales and Borders network, saw passenger journey numbers climb 19% from April 2024 to the end of March to 31.3 million on a year earlier.

It was the highest year-on-year percentage rise for any Ƶ rail operating company.
