New Birmingham ward boundaries could push Moseley Village out of Moseley

Proposed changes to the political landscape of Birmingham could "rip the heart' out of popular village as residents digest future of the city

Moseley Village could find itself no longer in Moseley under new plans to redraw the boundaries of Birmingham City Council's wards.

Under the proposals, the shopping and entertainment area and historic St Mary's Church would come under the newly created Balsall Heath and Cannon Hill ward instead of Moseley and Kings Heath.

A similar fate awaits residents of Erdington as its train station and historic abbey could find themselves in the newly created Short Heath while the Jewellery Quarter looks set to move from Ladywood to Winson Green.

The moves are all part of plans to revamp the political map in Birmingham which and wards with either one or two representatives instead of the three currently in place in all wards.

Also, local elections would be held once every four years from 2018 instead of the existing system which sees the electorate head to the ballot box in three of every fours years.

The number of wards will increase from 40 to 77 in 2018 and cover smaller areas (see list below).

Moseley residents have reacted with fury at the news, with the Moseley Forum claiming the changes would "rip the heart" out of the area and "cut off" its limbs.

In spring, trendy Moseley was crowned best place to live, beating London suburbs such as Muswell Hill, Mayfair and Blackheath in a national newspaper.
