New Birmingham council leader John Clancy to face government watchdog committee in public

The Birmingham Independent Improvement Panel will grill council leaders in public on December 14 before sending crunch report to the Local Government Secretary Greg Clark

Birmingham’s will be grilled by a government-appointed watchdog committee in one of his first public appearances since being appointed by Labour colleagues last week.

The government’s is also inviting people to send in questions ahead of the meeting at the Council House on December 14.

A full year into the council's failings, city leaders were expected to have delivered major improvements in the way the council works.

But the panel has not yet been satisfied and in particular is , including other public institutions, businesses, charities and community groups.

Coun Clancy succeeded amid fears he had failed to convince the Panel he could deliver the necessary changes.

The panel is keen to take questions addressing the problems raised by Lord Kerslake and the council's response to them.

Chairman of the panel, Birmingham businessman John Crabtree, said: "December is an important milestone for the council. A year on from the Kerslake review, the council will be reporting directly to the city's residents about the improvements it has made and those it still needs to achieve.

"We want to give as many residents as possible the chance to raise questions about the improvements that are most important to them.
