Net Zero Strategy welcome on the Humber as key sectors wind, bioenergy and heat are energised

Orsted, Drax and Northern Powergrid react to huge day of announcements on decarbonisation

Two of the Humber region’s biggest renewables-focused companies have welcomed the Net Zero Strategy.

Published by the government, it details how the government aims to meet legislated targets, and comes ahead of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ hosting the COP26 UN Climate Change Conference.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted the ambition could be achieved without giving up flying abroad or driving cars, as electrification and sustainable fuels come to the fore.

He said: “For years, going green was inextricably bound up with a sense that we have to sacrifice the things we love.

“But this strategy shows how we can build back greener without so much as a hair shirt in sight.

“In 2050, we will still be driving cars, flying planes and heating our homes, but our cars will be electric gliding silently around our cities, our planes will be zero emission allowing us to fly guilt-free, and our homes will be heated by cheap reliable power drawn from the winds of the North Sea.”

The biggest player in the latter is Orsted, with a £14 million base in Grimsby serving the largest offshore wind farms in the world.
