The NEC: 10 facts you might not know

With the NEC Group changing hands, we look back at some of its accomplishments since it was opened in the 1970s

National Exhibition Centre

1) The NEC was originally going to be built adjacent to the M1 junction 21 near Leicester but it was turned down by Leicestershire County Council with claims that “The big shows won’t move away from London”.

2) In the last 37 years, more than 60 million visitors have attended events in NEC buildings.

3) The record total attendance for any one day at the NEC is 100,000, more visitors than can fit into Wembley Stadium.

4) The group brings in £2 billion into the West Midlands economy each year.

5) Opened by Elizabeth II in February 1976, the first event to be staged at the venue was International Spring Fair.

6) The NEC was one of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ top venues with more than 500 events in total held in 2013/14.

 

7) Since 1991, the NEC has been the venue for the international dog show Crufts

8) While it is not part of the deal, the Resorts World complex is soon to be open on the NEC grounds.
