MP's office receives £12,000 donation from failing care firm

Constituency office of Bromsgrove MP and Culture Secretary Sajid Javid accepted donation from Moundsley Hall Care Home

Sajid Javid

A Midland MP tipped to become the country's first Asian Prime Minister accepted nearly £12,000 from a failing nursing home on behalf of his constituency office.

Critics have called on Culture Secretary Sajid Javid to give back the money and questioned his judgement in accepting the donation from the Moundsley Hall Care Home in Birmingham.

Mr Javid, Tory MP for Bromsgrove, registered that he had received the £10,975 in donations to his local constituency party from the home on 29 May last year.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, which found that the care home was failing, was released on 3 May 2013.

A subsequent inspection in August 2013 found these problems had not been remedied and Moundsley Hall was issued with a compliance notice demanding improvements.

Four months later Mr Javid's local constituency office, which pays for its candidate's electioneering, received another £675 from Moundsley Hall.

Labour MP for Warley John Spellar said: "I am shocked that Sajid Javid has taken donations from a care firm failing its patients.

"He now needs to rapidly answer how much he knew about this when he received the money and to seriously consider whether he should give it back.
