Less than 24 hours after experiencing the agony of defeat against Leinster, Moseley marathon man Ollie Thomas risked pain in the feet by
The full-back was one of the Championship outfit鈥檚 five-man team 鈥 but the only player 鈥 which completed the 13.1 mile course to raise money for charities including Cure Leukaemia.
Not only that, even though Mose missed out in the B&I Cup the day before, Thomas was a victor in the long run as the Moseley Players鈥 Association quintet won the Small Business category with their first four runners home in a time of 7hrs 14mins.
And even if the 30-year-old wasn鈥檛 the fastest of his colleagues, finishing just outside the two hour mark, he took everything in his stride having played 80 minutes and scored all of Moseley鈥檚 points in their 24-22 reverse to the cup holders.
Indeed, Thomas admits he trudged off the pitch last Saturday hardly looking forward to the fact he would be doing his first long-distance run the next morning.
鈥淢y first thought after the game was trying to come up with ways to get away from the club because my knee was sore and my back hurt,鈥 Thomas said.
鈥淏y the time I鈥檇 had a shower I felt okay and then started thinking that I didn鈥檛 want to let anybody down. When I woke up in the morning I had an adrenalin buzz and I really wanted to get there and see if I could do it.鈥
That rush carried him through the city centre streets, down the Pershore Road and back into town and it was only near the end that the previous day鈥檚 exertions began to catch up with him.
鈥淚 cramped at 11 miles and had to run straight-legged for a while and overall I spent 20 minutes of the race running past everybody and the rest of it with everybody running past me,鈥 he said.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 feel too bad when I finished but didn鈥檛 feel great for the couple of days after it. But I鈥檓 glad I did it.鈥
And so are the good causes for whom the Moseley Players鈥 Association team of Thomas, Gary Peasland, Geoff Cadogan, Roger McFadden and Lee Evans raised more than 拢2,000.
Anyone who would like to add to that total can contact Brian Skeeles or Peter Veitch at the club on 0121 443 3631.
As for Thomas, he now admits having quite enjoyed the torment and is even considering carrying on with road running when he quits rugby.
鈥 Moseley have rescheduled their Autumn Supper for Friday, November 22 at which former England international Gareth Chilcott will be the guest speaker. More information at
