More than 80% of South West adults are in work, new figures show

Unemployment rate remains low though there is a blip in Plymouth where number claiming benefit is on the rise

Plymouth's Xmas jobs boom

Unemployment remains low in the South West – with more than 80% of adults in work - though the number claiming the controversial Universal Credit benefit has risen slightly in Plymouth, latest figures show.

Government statistics reveal that 80.2% of people in the South West, aged 16 to 64, have a job with unemployment running at 2.7%.

The figures for January to April 2019 show that 17.5% of the region’s population is classed as “inactive”, which means they are not looking for a job, for instance if they are students, carers, or long-term sick.

In Plymouth, 6,020 people are claiming benefit, mostly the new Universal Credit (UC), but there are a few “legacy” claimants still receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance.

There has been a shortage of construction workers in the South West

This figure, also for the first quarter of 2019, has risen by 13% on the same period in 2018, but a spokesman at Jobcentre Plus was quick to explain the total included some UC claimants who are in work but receiving a top-up benefit.

Of the Plymouth claimant count, 1,089 are young people aged between 18 and 24, a total which has also risen, by 12%, year-on-year.

But Paul Paskins, from Plymouth’s Jobcentre Plus, said the job market was still sound in the city. In 2018 there have been job vacancies in sectors such as care, security, construction, hospitality and engineering.

“There is a good supply of vacancies,” he said. “But they are across the board, not from any specific centre.”
