More than 100 organisations across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay have shared PPE to strengthen the supplies available to frontline carers in the county.

It comes as NHS bosses  appealed to businesses across the county to donate their idle stocks of personal protective equipment to doctors and nurses fighting coronavirus.

The demand is due to a shortage of masks, aprons, face visors and other items of PPE available to NHS staff to treat patients with Covid-19,

NHS Devon Clinical Commission Group wrote to businesses asking for help to increase supply. The CCG, which is responsible for equipping healthcare workers with the items they need, said demand for PPE in hospitals was outstripping supply.

Among the businesses to step forward is Theatre Royal Plymouth, which has given items including gloves, splash suits and facial protection.

Adrian Vinken, Chief Executive at Theatre Royal Plymouth said: “Our core staff are working hard to keep the theatre safe and ready throughout this period but our manufacturing teams at TR2 have had to stop working on new shows. They normally use a lot of protective equipment and so were delighted to be able to donate this essential kit to support our key NHS and care workers.

“Our shows can’t go on at the moment, so we’re really pleased to be able to help the true stars of the moment, those NHS and care staff in Plymouth and across Devon working tirelessly to keep us all safe. They’re doing such a magnificent selfless job and we’d like to encourage any businesses in the city who are able to, to donate to this initiative.”

A letter was sent by the CCG to businesses and shared via chambers of commerce on March 26.
