Manchester mayor Andy Burnham demands Government help as councils pledge £250m to airport

Greater Manchester's ten councils are investing £250m into the airport, and are now calling on ministers to make similar pledges

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has called on the Government to help the region's ten councils support the Manchester Airport Group after they pledged a £250m investment package.

The finance package for the group - which also includes East Midlands and London Stansted airports - , and was pledged despite the authorities not expecting to see significant repayment for a couple of years.

At a remote press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Burnham was asked why Greater Manchester's ten councils should be paying to keep the group afloat.

He responded: “Because it’s fundamental not just to the economy of Greater Manchester, but to the economy of the whole of the North of England, alongside John Lennon Airport [in Liverpool].

“Manchester is crucial because of those long-haul links between the North and Asia, North America and elsewhere. We have to get the airport through this, and as shareholders, the councils have to do what shareholders do. They protect their investment.

“The investment produces a dividend in good times, but also it comes with challenges throughout the more difficult times, so they are not doing anything that any investor wouldn't do.

“The challenge is more towards the Government. Aviation hasn't had a deal yet. Airports are critical to the regional economy not just in the North but in all parts of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.

"If we are going to get this recovery off on the right foot, we do need to go into this in the spirit of partnership and not leave councils that are really struggling to manage this."
