Manchester barrister Gareth Shires plays crucial role in landmark legal victory over Volkswagen

He's helping over 16,000 car owners who bought a diesel VW, Audi, Skoda or Seat between 2008 and 2015

A North West barrister has played a crucial role in an important legal victory over Volkswagen.

The High Court on Monday ruled that the world's largest carmaker had breached European emissions rules by installing unlawful "defeat devices" in diesel cars.

Gareth Shires of Exchange Chambers in Manchester is instructed by SPG Law to deal with all aspects of the litigation.

He is also instructed by the Steering Committee, a group of the three firms with the largest number of clients, to represent all of the claimants as part of a larger counsel team.

SPG Law is acting for over 16,000 car owners who bought a diesel VW, Audi, Skoda or Seat car between 2008 and 2015.

There are a total of 91,000 car owners across all claimant firms and it has been estimated that around 1.2 million vehicles containing the “defeat device” have been supplied to purchasers in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

Speaking after the judgment, Mr Shires said: “This ruling is a significant step forward in holding Volkswagen to account in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

“In rejecting VW’s arguments, the judge found that the software function in º£½ÇÊÓƵ vehicles did indeed amount to a prohibited defeat device, as has been previously admitted by VW to US regulators.
