Major protest against Sutton Coldfield green belt plan

Campaign group to meet this weekend ahead of public inquiry into proposals to build 6,000 homes near Walmley

Members of the 'Project Fields' campaign aiming to protect green belt in Sutton Coldfield protest outside Birmingham City Council

A major protest to defend the green belt is being held this weekend ahead of a public inquiry into the plan.

Sutton Coldfield MP Andrew Mitchell will join campaigners on a walk around the green belt site earmarked for development by council planning chiefs.

Council bosses claim the site, off the A38 near Walmley, is needed to meet

Members of the 'Project Fields' campaign to save the green belt are calling on supporters to join them for the protest at 10am on October 11, starting in Laburnum Drive.

They are also protesting against proposals for a major factory on a neighbouring green belt site at Peddimore.

Organiser Suzanne Webb said: "It is important we work as one community, draw on the strengths of those around us and on the resolve of local residents who strongly believe that to build 6,000 homes and an employment zone the size of the Jaguar Land Rover site is not sustainable.

"Birmingham only has 15 per cent open space remaining, once we built on that what little open space we have, where do we go next? At some point the city has to say it is full."

Coun Ken Wood (Con Sutton New Hall) added: "This walk will raise awareness of the scale of the development we are facing. I urge everyone concerned about the future of our green belt to join us."
