Major plans to build hundreds of new homes and commercial space in the heart of Wolverhampton's historic Canalside Quarter have been approved.

Build-to-rent developer Placefirst submitted proposals for the £65 million regeneration scheme last year which will see 366 new homes built on land off Lower Horseley Fields in the city centre.

Now full planning permission and listed building consent has been granted, with work expected to start on site next summer.

Salford-based Placefirst will work alongside the City of Wolverhampton Council, the Canal and River Trust and the West Midlands Combined Authority to deliver a new 'canalside community' as part of the development.

It will include a mix of town houses, new build apartments and commercial space across five acres of brownfield land while heritage canalside properties, including several listed buildings, will be restored.

A new promenade, public open spaces, landscaping and pedestrian access to the canal towpath will also be created.

Darran Lawless, development director for Placefirst said: "We are delighted to receive full planning approval for this transformative development in Wolverhampton's Canalside Quarter.

"We are proud of all the hard work undertaken by the whole team and our partners, that will enable a brownfield site situated in such a historic location to reach its true potential, creating an exciting, sustainable new neighbourhood.
