Almost a quarter of people working in the Humber region are in low-skilled jobs.

Kishor Tailor, chief executive at the Humber LEP, said the startling figure posed “a challenge” for the region.

Speaking at the LEP’s annual summit on Wednesday, June 5, Mr Tailor said however changes to manufacturing and industry processes could spark big changes to jobs in years to come.

He said: “One of the challenges stems from the kind of industry we have got.

“The processing side of business has relied on cheap labour. That contributes part of it, but as we move forwards people will have to look at different ways of working.

“With automation, I think the types of jobs we have in the Humber will change.”

Mr Tailor spoke as the LEP released its annual review for the 2018/19 year.

The report was released in front of a packed out room at the Forest Pines Hotel near Scunthorpe during Humber Business Week.
