Protest against Lidl store

Supermarket giant Lidl has won permission to demolish a former bowling alley and gym building.

The decision is the latest twist in the long-running Stirchley superstore saga which has seen the evicted, along with

The buildings are now being demolished because they were standing in the way of the new Lidl.

Tow months ago, city councillors blocked the demolition of the bowling and gym buildings following objections from Western Power Distribution which has an electricity sub-station on the site.

But a revised plan, under which part of the building around the sub-station is retained, has now been approved.

The council's planning committee was told to expect Lidl to submit a new store plan during the autumn.

Committee member Coun Peter Douglas Osborn (Con Weoley) said it was "very sad" the gym and bowling alley buildings were to go despite local opposition.

Coun Gareth Moore (Con Erdington) added: "It is unfortunate that we are in this situation but, now this building is derelict, it is in the best interest it is demolished, whether or not Lidl get planning permission in future."
