Lidl plans to double Birmingham store

Budget supermarket giant submits new proposals for shop in Kitts Green which will 'inject several millions' into local economy

Budget supermarket giant Lidl is planning "to inject several million pounds" into the city's economy by building a new supermarket in east Birmingham.

The German company has submitted an application to demolish its existing store in Kitts Green and a larger outlet almost twice the size, albeit with fewer parking spaces.

The company, which operates about 600 nationwide including in Kings Heath, Erdington and Sutton Coldfield, has a 13,347 sq ft shop on the corner of Mackadown Lane and East Meadway but is proposing to replace it with a 25,317 sq ft unit on the same site.

The new, two-storey building would have 97 parking spaces, down from 116, and would increase employment at the from 30 to 45 full- and part-time staff.

It has been trading on the site for more than a decade and sits in the middle of a dense residential area of the city.

A design statement submitted by Oldham-based architecture practice Nicol Thomas said: "The proposed Lidl food store will contribute to the reuse of the existing site.

"We anticipate it will bring several million pounds worth of investment into the area, providing a new, attractive and modern development.

"Lidl primarily seek to serve the immediate local community in which they are located, both in terms of their discounted shopping offer and employment.
