A £1 million funding boost has been landed by an ambitious £7.2 million programme to help further regenerate Cleethorpes as a coastal resort.
Humber Local Enterprise Partnership has secured the cash, via the Government's Local Growth Fund, with work well underway on public realm improvements in North East Lincolnshire.
The Cleethorpes Regeneration Programme involves road safety improvements, an extension and enhancement of public space along Sea Road - a main access point to the central and northern promenades, and improvements to the Pier Gardens - including a contemporary multi-use pavilion, housing enhanced public facilities and a small events space.
It has been said that the works will help to develop “high quality” restaurants, retail and leisure facilities in the future.
The scheme is already supported by Coastal Communities Fund and Heritage Lottery Fund.
Lord Haskins, chair of the LEP, said: “Cleethorpes has the potential to attract many more tourists and be a key part of the visitor economy in the Humber.
“We believe these important infrastructure improvements will enable the regeneration of the area and will help grow tourism. They will not only enable job creation but aid the growth of businesses within the town.
“This would not be possible without initial investment to open the site and make it suitable for development and I am delighted that the Humber’s Local Growth Fund allocation, which we have secured from Government, is able to support regeneration in this part of North East Lincolnshire.”
Overall, the Cleethorpes Regeneration Programme aims to develop and diversify the economic role of the resort, attract new visitors and extend their dwell time.
It wishes to support the attraction of new investment and creation of new jobs by enhancing developer confidence in the area.
The programme also includes significant investment in public spaces on Alexandra Road, High Street and Sea View Street, part of a golden loop for tourists to walk, when not enjoying the beach. Hull firm PBS Construction won the tender.
Councillor John Fenty, North East Lincolnshire s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “There are a number of projects going on in the resort, with improvements to how the place looks and works key to drawing visitors into the area and making it a place that people want to live and work in as well.
“We’ll be holding information days and have the plans on show through the summer in the resort so people can let us have their views.
“The plans for the area have been in the pipeline for a while and it’s thanks to external funding that we’ve been able to bring these plans forward in the last few years.”
