Leading Hull businessman Dr Paul Sewell OBE takes the chair at KR

Footballing youngster turns to rugby league in sporting career sandwiched by creating a £115m city headquartered business

High profile Hull businessman Paul Sewell OBE has been appointed chair of rugby league side Hull KR.

The Sewell Group leader, who heads a prominent cluster of companies covering construction, estates management and retail, is described as bringing new levels of expertise to prepare the club for “lift off”.

He will work alongside chief executive Paul Lakin and owner Neil Hudgell at the East Hull club where his company recently took on Craven Park stadium naming rights.

Dr Sewell, who was a budding footballer before turning to business, said: “One of the main things that attracted me is the revitalisation of the game itself through Super League’s association with worldwide sporting giant IMG.

“Being a rising club in a declining game is counter intuitive to me so I’m heartened that, through Paul Lakin, Hull KR have been at the centre of driving this change and modernisation as a local club, owned and controlled in Hull, by Hull, for Hull!”

It will bring a new chapter to a colourful life, which Dr Sewell documented in his recent autobiography. He was a key figure behind Humber Business Week, is a strong advocate for the business community and the area in general, and last mnth lead the tributes to Hull Live Business Awards Lifetime Contribution winner Malcolm Scott, a posthumous dedication.
