Late start fails to stop Phoenix Group rising to the challenge

Phoenix Group made it two wins from two in the Warwickshire Taverners Trophy this week by beating Clement Keys.

Both teams turned up on time but it was a case of lack of umpire stopped play with the blame by the unnamed official placed on traffic in the Leicester area.

Once the cricket started, the Phoenix opening bowlers kept things tight apart from a massive straight six down the ground from Bayley off the bowling of Watkins. Clement Keys were restricted to 135 for five, which was never likely to be enough with the powerful Phoenix batting line-up.

There was an attempt at a switch-hit during the Phoenix innings,which, not surprisingly, failed and saw Ahmed nearly adjudged lbw much to the amusement of his team-mates.

Darren Kok chipped in with 36 to see Phoenix home.

Beaten finalists KMPG got their tournament back on track by beating lawyers Shakespeares, despite a brisk 40 from tournament heavyweight Chris Lloyd Smith.

GVA racked up 171 for nine against CP Bigwood but still only just got home by seven runs with James Mattin helping CP Bigwood to 164 in their 16 overs in a high-scoring encounter.

With the sun shining the matches are coming thick and fast with the Phoenix Group setting the pace in the race to Edgbaston.
