Midland students are celebrating after receiving top grades in the rigorous International Baccalaureate diploma.

Tom Claughton and Saajan Jemahl, students at King Edward's School in Edgbaston, achieved the maximum 45 points, a feat achieved by only 146 students worldwide out of more than 135,000 who sat the exams this year.

More than one quarter of the cohort at KES scored 40 points or above, higher than the equivalent of four A*s at A-level.

Tom, the son of the school's Chief Master John Claughton, is now set to study modern languages at Oxford, while Saajan intends to study medicine,

John Claughton said: "This is a remarkable achievement and I am thrilled by the performance of our boys, in only our third year of IB. For two boys to once again have achieved the top mark of 45 points and so many to have gained over 40 points is a great credit to both the boys and the teachers.

"These results mean that a very large proportion of our boys will be accepted by the best universities for the most demanding subjects. I am very proud of how all the boys have done, but especially my son."

Students at RSA Academy in Tipton have also received their International Baccalaureate results.

Alex Beddall, from Moxley, scored 39 points and is the first person in his family to go to university, as well as the first student from the school to go to Oxford.
