Popular Lake District music festival Kendal Calling has been cancelled with organisers blaming a lack of guidance from the Government.

Announcing the decision to fans on Monday morning, bosses of the event, which was set to start on July 29, said the lack of a Government-backed insurance scheme and the delay to the publication of results from the Events Research Programme (ERP) had contributed to the "heart-breaking" decision.

They have now called on the Government to "reappraise its approach" and "listen to the recommendations of its own reports", as PA reports.

Headliners were set to include Stereophonics and Dizzee Rascal, with the 2020 event having also been cancelled due to the pandemic.

This meant that following the Government's decision to push back the end of social distancing to July 19, Kendal Calling may have still been able to go ahead.

However, festival bosses set out their reasons for postponing for a second consecutive year, to July 2022, in a letter to ticket holders.

They said: "Last Monday saw the delay of the so-called 'Freedom Day'.

"As Kendal Calling sits outside of this delay we would still be in a strong position to proceed.
