(JLR) new manufacturing centre has won a national award.

Called Engine Manufacturing Centre º£½ÇÊÓƵ, it was named the country's top regeneration project by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) at its 2014 Awards, beating competition from across the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

The centre, on the i54 development near Wolverhampton, is a new engine production facility covering approximately 777,210 sq ft with specialist machining equipment, engine assembly, storage and offices on 100 acres of brownfield land.

The local community was continuously involved during the development process which has created more than a 1,000 jobs at the plant.

RICS Judges commented: "Originally conceived before the advent of the global financial crisis, the scheme illustrates that excellence transcends economic cycles.

"The scale and ambition of the production space is breath-taking and the internal environment suggests 'research facility' rather than 'workplace'.

"Built on a polluted brownfield site, the completed project is a fine example of elegant simplicity and practicality.

"A visionary policy of recruitment and training is designed to create large numbers of new jobs in the area which will generate a new benchmark for engineering skills and will be a key driver in rebalancing the economy locally and nationally."
