Jaguar Land Rover has announced it will stop production at its Halewood plant on Merseyside for nine days.

The car manufacturer has said the decision is not linked to the current coronavirus outbreak, but is part of a planned review of the plant's production schedules.

The JLR site will undergo the "planned non-production period" between March 19 and 27.

A spokeswoman for the Halewood plant, which employs around 4,000 people including 500 agency staff, told it had informed its workers of the move on January 13.

It's believed the Halewood production pause is linked to the launch of new products such as the Range Rover Evoque, and to "ensure market demand is balanced globally”, the spokeswoman said.

A full statement from JLR said: “As part of its standard business practice, Jaguar Land Rover regularly reviews its production schedules to support its launch planning process and to ensure market demand is balanced globally.”

It's understood "ongoing activity" will take place during the period, with "some production and employee training" taking place.

It comes after the plant in January announced hundreds of redundancies at Halewood .
