Plans for a new transport hub in Llanelli have been revealed. The proposed scheme from Carmarthenshire Council centre on a site south of Llanelli Railway Station providing new provision for bus, walking, cycling, electric vehicles and parking
The scheme has been developed in conjunction with Network Rail and Transport for Wales as the council seeks to promote the use of sustainable transport for journeys in to and around Carmarthenshire's largest town.
If built the facility will encourage buses, coaches and taxis to move fluidly through the site via a one-way system with vehicular access from Copperworks Road and a separate exit on to Station Road. Active travel access to the station is proposed via Station Road, Copperworks Road, and Great Western Terrace while there will be links to the Post Office car park.
Llanelli residents are invited to view the draft plans in much greater detail at a drop-in session to be held at the Antioch Centre in Copperworks Road on Thursday, March 27, between 10am and 7pm. Meanwhile a consultation period is now under way which will run until Friday, April 18.
A spokesman for Carmarthenshire Council said: "We are working with AtkinsRéalis to undertake the preliminary design of a multi-modal interchange facility for the Llanelli Railway Station with the vision of enhancing connectivity by streamlining links between rail, bus, and active travel methods of transport. We are looking to involve the public on our proposal to ensure that we are implementing an appropriate scheme that enhances access to more sustainable transport opportunities to support the growing development proposals that are ongoing in the south of Llanelli.
"The feedback we receive from this engagement will be considered to inform the final scheme design and, more importantly, allow the public the opportunity to provide comment and to understand the scheme we are putting in place, improving access to multiple key transport modes for Llanelli and the wider area."
Edward Thomas, cabinet member for transport, waste, and infrastructure services at the council, said: "We are looking for feedback to help shape plans for Llanelli multi-modal interchange to ensure that we are providing an appropriate solution that enhances access to more sustainable transport opportunities to support Llanelli into the future."
