Independent shops to be put on map in city

The free guide will be offered during a week-long series of events planned by retail chiefs to promote the city centre’s 140 stand-alone stores

A map pin-pointing Birmingham’s independent shops is to be launched in a bid to boost trade.

The free guide will be offered during a week-long series of events planned by retail chiefs to promote the city centre’s 140 stand-alone stores.

Called ‘Celebration of Independents’, the week will also feature lunchtime jazz sessions in spots across the city centre, as well as a summer garden party at Great Western Arcade on July 4.

The week, which runs from July 1 until July 5, has been organised by Business Improvement District Retail Birmingham – which represents more than 1,000 shops.

Chairman Jonathan Cheetham, said: “Retail Birmingham has always recognised the important role that independents play in bringing personality and vitality to the city centre.

“With a board comprising of a number of active retailers, we have a full understanding of the situation facing our members and continuously work to offer marketing support and lobby for financial support to best help them grow and assist their businesses in these challenging times.

“In developing effective campaigns such as the Celebration of Independents week, we can continue to raise the profile of the wonderful mix of unique shops on offer in Birmingham and encourage visitors to continue to explore these hidden gems.”

Gay Faulkner, manager at Great Western Arcade and Vice Chairman at Retail Birmingham, called on shoppers to attend the garden party, which will see stores opening late with free cocktails and nibbles handed out.
