I'm A Celebrity kicks off this weekend with hopes the show will sprinkle some stardust on the North Wales economy.

For the first time in 18 years, the hit reality TV show has been moved from the Australian jungle, due to Covid restrictions, and is now being filmed much closer to home at Gwrych Castle in Abergele.

In a tough year for the region's tourism and hospitality sectors this is a welcome boost - bringing immediate and longer term benefits.

The initial bounce comes from the investment in the local area - with jobs created and hotel rooms filled on the back of the show.

But beyond that the next two weeks will bring the type of media coverage that money could not buy - with audiences of around 10m for episodes in previous series.

One economic commentator said it can have the "Game of Thrones impact" on North Wales.

The fantasy HBO television series has been credited with bringing thousands of extra visitors to Northern Ireland - where it was filmed.

Bangor University economics lecturer Dr Edward Jones, who works in the university’s renowned Business School, said: "It should be a massive boost to the local tourism sector.
