Hundreds of SMEs attend º£½ÇÊÓƵTI's Export Week in the West Midlands

Regional firms given advice on how to capitalise on global events, such as the World Cup and the Olympics.

More than a thousand firms attended the regional Export Week

West Midlands SMEs are eyeing major international sporting events such as forthcoming World Cups in Brazil and Qatar as multi-million pound trade overseas trade opportunities.

An estimated 1,250 West Midlands firms attended last week - the country’s biggest regional turnout.

"It emerged that many were looking to capitalise on future global sports events and resulting infrastructure projects to expand their export operations, following the business success of the 2012 London Olympics.

Paul Noon, º£½ÇÊÓƵTI’s regional director, said: “Export Week has been fantastic and has shown us that exporting is certainly alive across the West Midlands counties. We know the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s future prosperity will not come from relying on domestic markets alone and exports are vital to our continued growth.

“There’s huge interest from West Midlands companies in the opportunities arising from the upcoming major sporting events and infrastructure projects in places like of Brazil and Qatar.

"The London Olympic Games showed the world that we could deliver a successful and complex project on time and on budget. This has led to hosting nations turning to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ to help deliver their own events with supply opportunities running into the billions.

"We’ll continue to play a key role in helping West Midlands firms maximise these opportunities.”

So far, the 2012 Olympics has led to a £11.6 billion boost to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ economy from the Games. This has been achieved through businesses securing contract wins, additional sales and new foreign investment
