Hull University helping brew 'perfect storm' to fight climate change in Humber

Climate change and decarbonisation will take centre stage again this week as Hull hosts Waterline Summit

The backing of academia, industry and the public sector is brewing “the perfect storm” in the Humber to tackle climate change.

As Hull’s Bonus Arena prepares to play host to a major climate change summit on Thursday, the university’s role in driving the region’s war on carbon has been praised by its organiser.

Andy Parkinson, chair of Marketing Humber, said the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s 2050 target to become net-zero carbon could only be achieved through innovation, giving Hull University the opportunity to be a world-leader in decarbonisation.

He said: “The university, like lots of other people, has realised the biggest global challenge is climate change. We will only be able to decarbonise through innovation and collaboration.

“That collaboration needs to be three-fold. You need strong research-based academia, industry which is willing to invest, and the backing of the public sector.

“What we have here in the Humber is an institution with world-class talent in the university, global businesses like Orsted investing millions in R&D, and local government working together and doing their bit.

“It does feel like the perfect storm is brewing in the Humber.”

Mr Parkinson’s words came as Marketing Humber prepared to host The Waterline Summit in Hull.
