Hull construction and maintenance firm, KWL, has recruited a record number of apprentices.
A total of 13 more school leavers have joined what is now a 41-strong team on the books. This year鈥檚 cohort were invited along with their families to an annual celebration at Hull鈥檚 Guildhall, where tool kits were presented by the Deputy Lord Mayor, Kalvin Neal.
KWL increased its intake through the pandemic, with 34 apprentices now having been enrolled in the past three years. They now make up eight per cent of the workforce, with a benchmark of 2.5 per cent - and slighly lower for those in the public sector.

Roger Grannon, chief operations officer said: 鈥淭oday鈥檚 apprentices are entering a sector which will continue to be in high demand for many years to come.
鈥淲hen we start promoting the scheme in the spring, we鈥檙e always incredibly impressed by the standard and sheer number of the individuals who apply to work with us. KWL has an excellent reputation for employee engagement, training and development which attracted over 200 applicants this year.
鈥淚鈥檓 delighted we鈥檙e able to take on so many apprentices. It鈥檚 quite rare for the construction industry. Our apprentices are mentored and supported by highly skilled and experienced operatives and supervisors who not only induct them into the world of work, but also help them to develop.鈥
KWL was established in 2006 and operates as one of Hull鈥檚 leading building, repair and maintenance contractors. Primary contracts are with Hull City Council to provide extensive property services to approximately 23,000 homes in the area, which includes refurbishment of tenanted homes, as well as an extensive private sector client portfolio.
Mathew Brown has joined the electrical team, having just completed his GCSEs at Wolfreton School. He said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 amazing to be working for such a great local company. I鈥檓 excited to see what the future holds.鈥
Paige Cooper has joined as plasterer and tiler. She said: 鈥淭hese are not just jobs for the boys, there are many women working in construction at KWL and I couldn鈥檛 wait to get stuck in.
鈥淚鈥檓 really enjoying my job so far. With one day at college each week and working onsite for the rest of the time, I鈥檓 learning fast and loving it.鈥
