HSBC moves its º£½ÇÊÓƵ bank headquarters to Birmingham

In Birmingham's biggest inward investment deal for a generation, Britain's biggest bank is relocating its º£½ÇÊÓƵ operation to Arena Central

Banking giant has announced it is moving its º£½ÇÊÓƵ personal and business bank to Birmingham in the largest inward investment deal in a generation.

At least 1,000 head office roles will move from London to as a result of the move.

It comes as a result of new laws over ring-fending investment arms from the Vickers report into banking.

The move will start imminently and be completed by January 2018.

Birmingham was chosen following a review of a number of possible head office locations. The review considered whether London was necessarily the best place for the ring-fenced bank’s head office given the º£½ÇÊÓƵ wide coverage of HSBC’s 16 million customers, its employees and branch network.

HSBC’s roots in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ began in Birmingham with the opening of the first branch of the Birmingham and Midland Bank in 1836. The city, which is already home to more than 2,500 HSBC employees, is a leading start-up hub, with 18,000 businesses created in the past year.

HSBC is in advanced negotiations to conclude the acquisition of a 250-year lease on a new office comprising 210,000 sq ft at Two Arena Central which is part of Birmingham’s Enterprise Zone.

It is anticipated that development of the site will start by June.
