New proposals have been lodged to transform the former Wetherspoons pub in Willenhall into eight studio flats. This marks the second application for the development of The Malthouse on New Road, following the withdrawal of a previous application by Menfor Group in August last year.
The current application largely mirrors the previous one, which suggested the construction of eight one-bedroom flats, six parking spaces and bicycle storage. The proposed work includes adding an additional storey to the existing building, resulting in four floors, each housing two apartments.
On the ground floor, the section of the building facing New Road is divided into two halves. The old single-storey seating area at the front of the pub would be converted into retail space, while the other half would accommodate the two ground floor flats.
The rear of the building, previously home to the bar, seating area and customer toilets, has been partitioned off in this planning application. Cr8 Architecture, the agent, stated that this part of the building is reserved for future residential development.
The New Road pub closed its doors to patrons in March 2023. Historically, the building served as a cinema and bingo hall, reports .
The property was sold in 2024 after being listed on the market with offers invited in the region of £650,000.
