Affordable housing and a “cultural hub” are among draft proposals for a potentially huge development around the main entrance to Bristol’s city docks.

Bristol City Council has published a “vision” for plans to revamp the Cumberland Basin, which it now refers to as Western Harbour.

BusinessLive’s sister website BristolLive the council and the city’s mayor want to redevelop the 1960s road network over the River Avon and Cumberland Basin, open up space for up to 3,000 new homes, and create a new road crossing from Hotwells to Ashton Gate.

The newly released vision of the proposed scheme, which follows months of consultation with local people, accommodates the area’s historic harbourside warehouses, as well as the skate park and Riverside Garden Centre.

One of its suggestions includes the conversion of one of the former bonded warehouses into a “mixed-use cultural hub” to benefit the whole city.

The council said the vision also addressed the city’s housing crisis and climate change, containing commitments to reduce local traffic, improve sustainable travel options and increase biodiversity along the River Avon.

It added possible new homes in the area would be “a mix of sizes and tenures” with half of the properties being classed as affordable housing.

Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees, said: “This vision gives us a clear understanding of the kind of place Bristolians want Western Harbour to be. The ideas and principles set out in the vision are ambitious and far-reaching.
