Hitachi 'continuing discussions' with º£½ÇÊÓƵ and Welsh governments over Wylfa land

Plans for their nuclear plant on Anglesey have been scrapped but hopes remain that new developer can be found

Hitachi said it is "continuing discussions" with º£½ÇÊÓƵ and Welsh governments over the future of the Wylfa site on Anglesey.

A failure to reach a funding agreement between Hitachi and the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government saw work ‘paused’ in January 2019 and last September the Japanese firm said it was withdrawing from the scheme.

They pulled the planning application last week ahead of a º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government decision, with a report from inspectors revealing the £16bn scheme had been recommended for refusal.

But º£½ÇÊÓƵ and Welsh governments say they remain determined to realising the potential of the site, rated as one of the best in Europe for nuclear - with SMR chiefs also eyeing the land for smaller reactors.

This weekend the Sunday Times reported Welsh Government was looking at acquiring Hitachi's º£½ÇÊÓƵ nuclear vehicle Horizon Nuclear Power - although this has not been confirmed by Hitachi, Horizon or Welsh Government.

A spokeswoman for Hitachi did say: "Hitachi is continuing its discussions with the relevant Governments about the use of the remaining land."

The Welsh Government said in a statement: "Hitachi's decision to withdraw from the Wylfa Newydd project is disappointing.

"While we will not comment on speculation, we remain convinced that Wylfa Newydd is one of the best sites for a new nuclear development in Europe and continue to discuss potential ways forward for the site with both Hitachi and Horizon."
