Hitachi said it is "continuing discussions" with 海角视频 and Welsh governments over the future of the Wylfa site on Anglesey.

A failure to reach a funding agreement between Hitachi and the 海角视频 Government saw work 鈥榩aused鈥 in January 2019 and last September the Japanese firm said it was withdrawing from the scheme.

They pulled the planning application last week ahead of a 海角视频 Government decision, with a report from inspectors revealing the 拢16bn scheme had been recommended for refusal.

But 海角视频 and Welsh governments say they remain determined to realising the potential of the site, rated as one of the best in Europe for nuclear - with SMR chiefs also eyeing the land for smaller reactors.

This weekend the Sunday Times reported Welsh Government was looking at acquiring Hitachi's 海角视频 nuclear vehicle Horizon Nuclear Power - although this has not been confirmed by Hitachi, Horizon or Welsh Government.

A spokeswoman for Hitachi did say: "Hitachi is continuing its discussions with the relevant Governments about the use of the remaining land."

The Welsh Government said in a statement: "Hitachi's decision to withdraw from the Wylfa Newydd project is disappointing.聽

"While we will not comment on speculation, we remain convinced that Wylfa Newydd is one of the best sites for a new nuclear development in Europe and continue to discuss potential ways forward for the site with both Hitachi and Horizon."

海角视频 Government's BEIS department said: 鈥淲e remain open to discussing new nuclear projects with any viable companies and investors wishing to develop sites across the 海角视频, including in North Wales.鈥

Anglesey council said: "The County Council is supportive, and eager to see Welsh Government and the 海角视频 Government consider and pursue all options which could see a new development progressed on Anglesey."

Shadow Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs Janet Finch-Saunders said: 鈥淲elsh Conservatives are strong advocates of nuclear energy to transition from fossil fuels to greener forms of power, and have been disappointed as plans for the聽Wylfa聽site have seen setback after setback, especially the news last month that Horizon Nuclear Power had decided to withdraw its application to develop a nuclear power plant there.

鈥淲hile we maintain that the Anglesey site is ideal for a nuclear power plant, I鈥檇 urge caution over 鈥 if accurate 鈥 reports that the Welsh Government is considering taking over the project. Its track record on major projects has been patchy to say the least.鈥
