A huge £1.7billion has been spent with businesses in the West of England as part of Hinkley Point C power station's construction, a new report on the project has found.

EDF Energy said it had "smashed" its target of £1.5billion five years ahead of schedule after spending with more than 1,100 companies in the region.

A total of £448million has been spent in Bristol, according to the socio-economic impact report, while Somerset has seen £368million, Gloucestershire £147million, and Devon £59million.

The report said more than 10,000 jobs had also been created to support Hinkley Point so far, and that the project was on track to create 25,000 roles by the end of construction.

Hinkley Point C’s managing director Stuart Crooks said: “This report charts another year of success for Hinkley Point C in delivering on our ambitious targets for social, economic and environmental benefits.

“As the country and our region emerge from the current crisis, we will serve as a catalyst for national recovery – both through this project and the follow-on project at Sizewell C.”

Hinkley Point C said it had recruited 640 apprentices and 11,000 people had been trained and assessed at the Somerset-based Construction Skills Centre.

The project is working with organisations including Somerset Chamber of Commerce, SWMAS and Local Enterprise Partnerships to help local businesses into the supply chain, it said.
