Hammerson unveils plans to transform part of former Debenhams store in Leicester into 300 new homes

The company wants to reduce the amount of floor space occupied by 'challenged retail categories' at flagship destinations

Debenhams, Highcross, Leicester.

Property developer Hammerson has unveiled plans to build hundreds of new homes in Leicester city centre.

The company wants to turn part of the former Debenhams department store at Highcross into 300 build-to-rent apartments.

The plans also include flexible space for retail and leisure brands as well as improved public realm and amenities such as co-working space and a private dining room.

Now Hammerson is working with built-to-rent operator Packaged Living to develop the plans before submitting a planning application early next year.

The proposals will support the creation of up to 800 new jobs on site and in the supply chain during the construction phase.

Hammerson says the scheme will support its strategy to reduce the amount of floor space occupied by 'challenged retail categories' at its flagship destinations, particularly department stores.

Mark Bourgeois, Hammerson's managing director for the º£½ÇÊÓƵ and Ireland, said: "This announcement is another example of the steps we are taking to manage the structural shift in retail whilst maintaining the vibrancy at our flagship destinations through a diversified offer and mix of uses.

"This exciting project will meet demand for rented accommodation in Leicester city centre and ensure Highcross remains an exciting destination for visitors, whilst supporting local businesses and boosting footfall."
