Gwynedd power station workers vote for strike action over pay

Unite members who work at Dinorwig and Ffestiniog pumped storage plants have voted to take action

Power station workers in North Wales have voted for strike action in a row over pay.

Gwynedd pumped storage sites Dinorwig Power Station and Ffestiniog Power Station employ around 125 workers in Llanberis and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Now Unite members, which number more than 80 across the First Hydro sites, have voted for industrial action.

This follows months of negotiations over pay.

In the ballot 97 per cent of members voted in favour of strike action and 98.6 per cent voted in favour of action short of a strike.

A last ditch meeting will now take place in January with ACAS in a bid to resolve the issue before workers implement any action.

Daryl Williams, Unite regional officer, said: “This ballot result clearly shows that our members' patience with their employer has completely run out.

"First Hydro must now recognise the seriousness of the situation and negotiate a fair pay settlement. If this doesn’t materialise soon we will be announcing dates for industrial action.
