The º£½ÇÊÓƵ heatwave could lead to reduced train services across the South of England and Wales after midday today (Thursday, July 25), Great Western Railway (GWR) is warning.

Temperatures are expected to reach record-breaking levels in parts of the country and GWR is urging people to check before they travel.

Network Rail is predicting track temperatures of more than 50 degrees Celsius and says heat-related speed restrictions on lines are likely to be required.

GWR expects to reduce the number of long-distance services as a result and journeys are likely to take longer.

GWR managing director Mark Hopwood says the extent of the restrictions can only be determined by "conditions on the ground" and are likely to change throughout the day.

He said: “We will continue to run as many trains as we can but those travelling should be aware that we will have to reduce the number of trains we can run, journey times will take longer and those trains we can run will be much busier."

GWR says that those who have a ticket for Thursday but would prefer to travel on Friday instead will be able to use their tickets.

Mr Hopwood added: "The priority will be to keep trains running and customers moving safely, but changes to services are likely to be needed to allow that to happen."
