The next extension of the West Midlands Metro network in Birmingham city centre is due to be approved this week.

The board of the West Midlands Combined Authority will meet on Friday to discuss the one-mile extension which will run from Bull Street to Digbeth via the new HS2 station in Curzon Street.

This new section will have four stops at Albert Street, New Canal Street for HS2, Meriden Street and High Street Deritend.

The line will split at Bull Street where the service will go on to either New Street station and Broad Street or to the Jewellery Quarter, Black Country and Wolverhampton city centre.

Transport for West Midlands, which is part of the combined authority, has put together a £227 million funding package to build the line, purchase battery-powered trams and carry out extra work to improve Digbeth High Street.

The funding has come from central Government, grants and the tram network itself through borrowing against future West Midlands Metro profit.

The combined authority said local taxpayers would not be called upon to fund this.
