Greater Manchester less attractive to migrants since Brexit vote

Roughly two thirds of the short-term migrants in Greater Manchester – 4,112 in all – were in Manchester in mid-2017.

Fewer short-term migrants are coming to Greater Manchester following the Brexit vote.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal that there were 6,338 short-term migrants in our region for work or study in June 2017 – the latest data available.

The figure includes all migrants who are in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ for at least three months but less than a year, and who are here for employment or study rather than a holiday or other reason.

The situation in Greater Manchester reflects a national trend, which saw the number of short-term migrants across England and Wales fall from 207,160 in mid-2016 to 153,864 in mid-2017.

While the local figures aren’t broken down by EU and non-EU migrants, the national figures confirm that the drop in short-term migration has been driven by EU citizens.

Madeleine Sumption, Director of the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford: “It’s clear that the º£½ÇÊÓƵ has become a less attractive destination for EU citizens since the referendum, and this applies both to short-term migrants and people planning longer stays.

“There’s no single reason for this, but one important change since the referendum is that the value of the British pound has fallen – so people planning to come to do seasonal work or other short-term jobs would take home less money than they would have done in the past.

“Political uncertainty may also have played a role. But it’s also likely that some of the decline would have happened anyway – migration was running at record highs in the year before the referendum, so we may simply be seeing a return to more ‘average’ levels of migration.
