Goole has emerged as one of five sites shortlisted to host the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s first nuclear fusion power station.

The government is aiming to become the first country to commercialise the energy source, a move that could create thousands of jobs and play a crucial part in the nation’s net zero ambition.

The Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (Step) project is the first stage in that bid.

According to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Atomic Energy Authority (º£½ÇÊÓƵAEA), fusion has the potential to provide a source of low-carbon energy that creates nearly four million times more energy for every kilogram of fuel than burning coal, oil or gas.

It could also serve as a magnet for high-tech industries, furthering the development of science and technology capabilities.

Some £220m has been invested into finding an appropriate site for the project, which º£½ÇÊÓƵAEA is hoping could be operational by 2040.

A total of 15 locations were long-listed following an open call between December 2020 and March 2021.
