Why Germany is so crucial to the Welsh economy from inward investment to tourism

The huge importance of Germany on the Welsh economy has been highlighted by German Industry º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.

The body, which is based in Criccieth in Gwynedd, is the voice of German business in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.

With continuing uncertainty over the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ's future trading relationship with the European Union, here its chairman and chief executive, Dr Bernd Atenstaedt, explores the huge trading ties between the two countries and a why a no deal could see inward investment from German firms into Wales declining somewhat.

The total value of Welsh exports, goods and services worldwide, is now £17.2bn per annum. 61% of Welsh exports of goods and services go to the EU.

And 39% of Welsh imports and services come from the EU.

Of the Welsh exports to the EU, 18% go to Germany. Germany is the top export destination for Wales.

 The six main Welsh exports in goods to Germany are (in this order) transport equipment, road vehicles, electric machinery, iron and steel, medicinal and pharmaceutical products, power generating machinery and equipment.
