Now the Financial Times has reported that the interest is from a joint venture involving Westinghouse, Southern Company, an electricity utility, and US engineering group Bechtel.

Horizon Nuclear Power had previously appointed聽Bechtel聽as project management contractor for the scheme before Hitachi withdrew funding.

Westinghouse were beaten by Hitachi in a bidding war for the Wylfa site in 2012.

Its AP1000 nuclear power plant design has successfully completed review by 海角视频 regulators.

The US consortium鈥檚 approach to the government comes as prime minister Boris Johnson prepares to give a speech setting out a 鈥10 point plan鈥 of how the country proposes to meet the 2050 Carbon Neutral goal.

The Financial Times reported that in a letter to 海角视频 business secretary Alok Sharma, the US consortium partners said their prior knowledge of the site 鈥渃ould be leveraged to accelerate an AP1000 plant project at Wylfa as well as other sites across the 海角视频鈥.

Any deal would be dependent on the 海角视频 government introducing a new funding model for nuclear projects in Britain.

The consortium would also have to negotiate the purchase of the site with Hitachi, who had spent more than 拢2bn on the project before pulling out.

Duncan Hawthorne, CEO, Horizon said: "Given the benefits and maturity of Wylfa Newydd, there has been significant interest from third parties in working with us to take our project forward. We said we would co-ordinate proactively with other parties and the 海角视频 government on how we can continue to progress development and that is now happening.

鈥淲e can鈥檛 comment on the specifics of these discussions but our sites are highly attractive for nuclear new build and, as the project鈥檚 developer, we have an enormous knowledge bank of what is required to do that successfully.

"Nuclear is critical to the country鈥檚 climate goals and is capable of bringing transformative economic benefits to regions of the country which need them most.

"We鈥檙e working hard to ensure Horizon and Wylfa Newydd continue to be at the heart of this effort.鈥

Ynys Mon MP Virginia Crosbie said: "It is clear we are going to need more nuclear to meet the Governments Net Zero target by 2050, and Ynys M么n has the best new build site in the 海角视频.

"Horizon and the local community have already put an enormous amount of work into Wylfa Newydd, meaning it could quite easily be picked up and taken forward with new project partners.

"I am working with all levels of local and National partners to make that happen.聽

"An energy partnership with the US would be a powerful symbol and is a unique opportunity to strengthen ties and continue strategic relations."
