Freedom Day 'unlikely' to be before July 19 despite imminent review on restrictions

The Business Secretary does not expect an earlier relaxation of the current July 19 date

'Freedom Day' and the end of all coronavirus restrictions are "unlikely" to come before July 19, the Government's Business Secretary has said.

Kwasi Kwarteng was speaking one week after Prime Minister Boris Johnson delayed Stage Four of the Government's roadmap.

Last Monday, Mr Johnson put back the June 21 date by four weeks due to the spread of the Delta variant of coronavirus, but said there would be a review after two weeks.

However today, Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng told Sky News he did not expect that to lead to an earlier relaxation of the current measures.

He said: “I would always err on the side of caution and I would look to July 19.

"It could be before but I think that is unlikely.

"Generally we have stuck to the dates we have set. I think now I am very focused on July 19.”
