Plans to transform the heart of our city are well on track, with workers laying the first lines today.

The first of the tracks that will again take trams on streets from Snow Hill station to New Street were laid at Colmore Gate in Bull Street.

The 拢127 million cost of the Midland Metro extension includes the new 拢40 million Urbos 3 tram fleet that will run between Birmingham and Wolverhampton. The first one arrived from Spain last month.

Cllr Roger Horton, Centro lead member for rail, said: 鈥淭rams are very much a transport mode of the future and this is a significant and symbolic moment for the Metro extension.

鈥淚n the year that sees the 60th anniversary of the last tram running in Birmingham we are seeing the first tracks go in for a new 21st century system.鈥 The extension is expected to create 1,300 new jobs and boost the West Midlands economy by at least 拢50 million a year. It is hoped work will be completed by 2015
