Fantasy film Willow remake being shot in Wales

Lucasfilm is making a version of Willow for Disney +

A new version of the hit 1980s fantasy film Willow is being made in Wales.

In a boost to Wales' growing creative industries sector, the mini-series for channel Disney + is being made by Lucasfilm.

As first revealed by BusinessLive Wales last year, the Willow production win for Wales comes after several years of negotiations between the Welsh Government and Lucasflm, which is owned by Disney.

Pembrokeshire-born Lucasfilm executive Lynwen Brennan played a key role in negotiations with the Welsh Government.

Creative industries is one of Wales' fastest growing sectors, with an annual turnover of more than £2bn. It employs more than 58,000 people, which is 52% more than 10 years ago

The Welsh Government would not disclose the value of support it is providing the project.

The 1988 released Willow film followed the journey of dwarf Willow Ufgood (played by Warkick Davis) and his task of protecting a baby named Elora Danan from an evil queen (Jean Marsh).

Davis is returning to the role for the new Willow project, as well as producer of the original Ron Howard. The original film, whose cast also included Joanne Whalley and Val Kilmer, was partly filmed in Dinorwig Quarry in North Wales.
