The Planning Inspectorate has begun the examination into the North Lincolnshire Green Energy Park proposal.

Having been accepted back in June, a preliminary meeting has now been held at Forest Pines Hotel, with further scoping meetings also taking place. It marks the beginning of the six month process, with a deadline for completion of May 15, 2023.

The £1 billion project aims to bring waste from energy, battery storage and green hydrogen production to Flixborough Industrial Estate, to the west of Scunthorpe. It could create 250 permanent jobs, with a development consent order required to build.

Solar 21 is behind the project, launched publicly in June 2020, with the Irish firm aiming to tap into the region’s carbon capture plans while heat treating ash to manufacture construction products as part of the byproduct process.

Nationally-significant with the energy capacity set at 95MW, it will need the approval of the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

It also proposes 30MW of battery storage and 10MW of green hydrogen production and storage, with district heating potential with a steam network.

Other infrastructure would include new road access from the A1077, potential for heavy transport fuelling and charging, as well as new rail head complex to handle cargo and the reinstatement of a rail link to Scunthorps Steelworks.
