Everton brand European Super League 'preposterous arrogance' and call for plans to be scrapped

Bolton, Preston North End and Wigan's new chairman have also criticised the ESL

Everton's CEO and board have spoken out against the ESL

Everton's chief executive and board have called the proposed European Super League to be scrapped and criticised the clubs behind it for their "preposterous arrogance".

The move comes after news broke late on Sunday that Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool had signed up to plans for a breakaway European Super League.

The proposals have already been slammed by the likes of UEFA, the Premier League and the Prime Minister.

The three North West clubs joined Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham in agreeing to join the project, which will be governed by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

Outside of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus have also agreed to take part, though Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich hold reservations.

Chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale said: "I feel it is only right that, as CEO of your football club, I write to you directly following the plans made public over the weekend for a European Super League.

"As a proud custodian of Everton, I, along with my fellow board members, understand the responsibility that has been entrusted upon us to maintain the traditions of your club and of the wider game.

"Everton Football Club was a founder member of the Football League and a founder member of the Premier League.
