Electricity generation ends at one of º£½ÇÊÓƵ's last remaining coal-fired power stations

It employed 140 people

EDF Energy's Cottam Power Station, near Retford in Nottinghamshire

Electricity generation has ended at one of Britain's last remaining coal-fired power stations.

Cottam Power Station, near Retford in Nottinghamshire , has operated for more than 50 years but EDF Energy announced it would cease production this year as it would not be economically viable.

Jobs were put at risk by the decision but the energy giant has confirmed many of the 140 employees at the 2,000MW station had transferred to different parts of the company.

Cottam’s plant manager, Andy Powell, said: “Since the official announcement of the site’s closure earlier in the year we have been working with the Cottam team to ensure they secure the right future for them.”

Some employees have joined the team involved in building and, eventually, running the new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Somerset.

Other members of staff have moved to the West Burton A coal station in Nottinghamshire, which will operate until 2021, and the West Burton B combined cycle gas turbine station.

All apprentices have secured roles at other EDF Energy sites, the company has confirmed.

Mr Powell added: "It is a sad day, but I am immensely proud to have been part of the Cottam family since I started as an apprentice here and now as plant manager.
