Electric cars could be powered by tidal energy under a project under discussion on the Llyn Peninsula.

Nova Innovation has secured an investment of 拢1.2 million from the Welsh Government for its Enlli tidal energy project in North Wales.

The Enlli project creates the opportunity to generate electricity from the natural ebb and flow of the tide between Ynys Enlli 鈥� 鈥楾he Island in the Currents鈥� 鈥� and the mainland of Ll欧n.

As well as offering the potential to help the site (Bardsey Island in English) switch from a dependency on diesel generation to become the world鈥檚 first blue energy island it could also power cars on the mainland.

A spokeswoman said they are at the early stage of discussions in Wales after announcing that vehicles in Shetland are now fuelled by the power of the sea in a similar scheme in Scotland.

The marine energy experts have created the first ever electric vehicle charge point where drivers can 鈥榝ill up鈥� directly from a tidal energy source.

The spokeswoman added: 鈥淣ova has been working with The National Trust, as a significant landowner in the far Ll欧n Peninsula and Aberdaron area, to look at the potential for Nova鈥檚 tidal turbines to provide a local source of power to charge electrical vehicles in Aberdaron.鈥�

"We now have the reality of tidal powered cars, which demonstrates the huge steps forward we are making in tackling the climate emergency and achieving net zero by working in harmony with our natural environment."
